Beta-blockers are one class of medication with potential to treat anxiety-related disorders; however, current evidence remains limited and requires further characterization. Traditional medications used to treat these disorders, such as antidepressants and benzodiazepines, are often ineffective, not well-tolerated, and can be habit forming. In the present work, therefore, expected observational measures based on patients’ self-reports were such that atenolol would provide a beneficial effect for treatment of anxiety-related symptoms for a large percentage of our sample population; atenolol would have minimal tolerable adverse effects for those in our sample population; and patients in our sample population would report preferring treatment with atenolol compared to propranolol.
